The everyday causes: room, bedding, alcohol, food

The red flags that need a doctor

Most night sweats are benign, but a specific cluster of features should never be dismissed. Drenching night sweats that soak the sheets, especially when they come with unexplained weight loss, recurring fevers, a persistent cough, or swollen lymph nodes, can be a warning sign of infection such as tuberculosis, of thyroid disease, or, uncommonly, of a lymphoma or other cancer, and this combination warrants prompt medical assessment. Sweats that begin after starting a new medication point to that drug. New night sweats in a man, or sweats with a racing heart, tremor, and weight loss (suggesting an overactive thyroid), also deserve evaluation. The reassuring flip side is that sweats clearly tied to a hot room, heavy bedding, alcohol, or a late meal, with no other symptoms, are almost always benign and resolve when the trigger is removed.

How to cool the night down

The practical approach is to fix the temperature levers first and watch what remains. Set the bedroom cool, around 16 to 19 degrees Celsius, and switch to breathable bedding and nightwear that wick moisture rather than trap it. Move alcohol and heavy or spicy meals well before bedtime, since both raise heat production and disturb temperature control. If you take a warm bath or shower, time it 1 to 2 hours before bed, which, as Shahab Haghayegh's 2019 meta-analysis found, actually helps sleep by promoting the later heat loss that lowers core temperature, rather than leaving you warm at lights-out. Review any medications with a pharmacist or doctor if the timing fits.
